You’ve been preparing for a BBQ for the better part of the day, you finally start the gas, and two minutes in it turns off. Your tank is empty.
Some propane tanks come with a gauge that tells you how much is left, but if yours doesn’t have it, this simple hack is super easy and will tell you how much you have left.
Start by turning off the valve on your tank and disconnecting it from your grill. Take a cup of hot or warm water, and pour on the side of the tank starting from the top. Now run your hand along the side of the tank to feel the metal. The tank will feel warm where there is no propane and will feel cold at the place where the propane starts.
This method may not be the most accurate, but it’s definitely the simplest and gives a good idea of how much is left.
Why it works: The areas with propane will absorb the heat of the water and therefore feel cold to the touch while areas without propane will feel warm.
