Millions of Americans suffer from cluttered desk syndrome. (Copyright pending. SE 2021) How about Tips for a Man’s Spring Cleaning, January Style.
It was just too much clutter. As my role grew within my company so did my workload. Excess projects, within and not yet within my current skill set, combined with a new second screen (which I love by the way) led to several existential questions. “What color is my desk? Where is that pen? Where did I put my phone, etc.”
So I buckled down and spring cleaned, In mid-winter.
Men’s version, New-Years style.
The result? My brain exhaled. “Finally, I can organize myself!” it exclaimed to my surprise. Honestly, it kind of surprised me to hear my mind talking, Then again, it’s 2021 and nothing fazes me much anymore.
Reality: A cluttered desk space is a cluttered mind.
My advice? 3 points:
PROCRASTINATE: Pick up a paper only one time when possible. Either work on it now, or put it in the “To do next” folder. More sightings=more time spent. Whatever is not being worked on right now doesn’t need to be seen.
The project before you is enough without others in your face to take up space in the foreground of your mind.
1) MAP: Map out your desk space, drawers and filing tools. Anything not necessary on a daily basis should be labeled and filed where you’ll be able to find it.
2) ORGANIZE: Get desk organizers for your daily work. Smaller one for pens, sticky notes, etc. stacking or one unit with levels for papers.
(Notice the order. I didn’t think it would get past #3 during busy season, but most of us have slow times to implement #1-2).
In all honesty, the ability to find a pen when I need one is a blessing that I no longer take for granted. With an organizer for pens and notes, and/or a divided section organizer for papers and pens, I can finally see my desk!
